Faculty of Education - University of Ontario Institute of Technology
March 15 - 16, 2017
Organized through the Indigenous Centre at UOIT, teacher candidates participated in the moccasin project.
Here are some testimonies from their experience:
"It saddened me to hear what is happening to these young children and their families. After having the amazing opportunity to create baby moccasins at UOIT's Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre, I have a new found appreciation for FNMI community. Making moccasins is not easy but it sure is rewarding. I love knowing that a child is going to have the opportunity to keep some of their heritage with them as they grow up. If the opportunity arose, I would definitely do it again but next time bring more friends! Amazing experience! "

"This was a fantastic experience! Rick and Jill were very welcoming to everyone who dropped in. After picking up the method so quickly, I wouldn't mind going back to volunteer my time and helping them with future projects. I would love to bring this into my practicums and pass along the knowledge as well as having other recognize the importance of the cause!"

"I came to know of the Moccasin Project through the UOIT Faculty of Education and UOIT-Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre. The disproportionate number of Indigenous children in foster care across the country is alarming. The mission of this initiative is inspiring and crucial for authentic reconciliation with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. I am honoured to have shared time and space with Elders, students, and fellow teacher candidates to contribute to this initiative. I value the opportunity to reflect on my own relationships, commitments to the land, and professional development as a teacher. Through song and solidarity, let us continue the work #sotheycangohome! Chi-Miigwetch!"

“Very awesome! I definitely plan to have another one of these workshops in the fall too, as there is no time limit on getting these moccasins made for the cause.”
